Writing
Initially just a send a proposal to the publisher.

As far as word-counts go, use the following as very vague guidelines:

Partizan Historical: 15,000 (well illustrated) - 35,000 (few images)
Partizan Special Edition: 35,000 (well illustrated) - 80,000 (few images)
Partizan Army Guides: 10,000 (well illustrated) - 15,000 (few images)
Wargame Rules: 10,0000 - 40,000 (!)
Scenario books: 5,000-35,000 (900-2500 per scenario, we prefer at least around a dozen per book)

Other: Ask us!

Image and file guidelines
All material is set in Quark Xpress on a PC, not a Mac. We do have the software to allow us to read and access Mac format discs but the conversion process is somewhat time consuming!

We prefer all text to be submitted as Word .doc format files, .txt files can also be accepted. Please do not send text in obsolete word processing formats! Hardcopy may be required if the text contains image placement guidelines, formatted text (bold/italic), foreign characters or tables.

Images should be supplied on CD (or DVD) as tif format. Eps are acceptable. Jpg can be used for b&w images, jpg format images are lower quality and are not generally suitable for high resolution colour. Colour should be CMYK but we are able to convert RGB images. Resolution should be 300dpi (images to be scanned at 300dpi, not converted from 72/150dpi). Images grabbed from the internet generally look horrible when printed as they are usually 72dpi. We can also scan originals.

SETTING TEXT

SPACING
SINGLE SPACES AFTER FULL STOPS ARE SUFFICIENT, THERE IS NO NEED TO DOUBLE (OR TRIPLE!) SPACE NEW SENTANCES.

FORMATTING TABLES
Please take the time to learn how to set tabs in Word. Please try and avoid using multiple tabs and especially the space bar to line up columns. It takes considerable time and effort that could be better applied elsewhere to strip out bad formatting. Single tabs are sufficient!

Here's a quick how to:

1.. Select the paragraph in which you want to set a tab stop.

2 Click the 'L' shape at the far left of the horizontal ruler until it
changes to the type of tab you want: left, right, center, decimal, or bar.

2.. Click the horizontal ruler where you want to set a tab stop.

3.. That's it! Repeat as necessary.

To remove unwanted tab stops just drag them out of the ruler bar and
remember to only highlight the section to be tabbed out.

This will also save you a lot of time in trying to line up text in columns.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE TABLE FEATURE IN WORD,
THEY DO NOT TRANSLATE INTO OUR VERSION OF QUARK,
WE JUST GET THE TEXT

Proofing

Proofs will be supplied to you as Adobe Acrobat pdf files. Adobe Acrobat is available as a free download. It's one of the most commonly used 3rd party apllications if you are concerned about internet safety etc. Click the button below to go to Adobe's website.

It is possible to annotate acrobat files sent to you as you would with hardcopy. It's actually preferable that you don't as it's tricky to copy and paste from. The most efficient method is to list changes in an email (or a Word doc if there is a lot) in the following format:

page x, paragraph x, line x

Page numbers in the document and the page number of the pdf may not tally. Please use the page number on the 'physical' page of the document for your annotations.

Some things to note when proofing:

Proofs are low quality to keep the file size down and this will cause some images to become distorted.

Text gets pushed forwards and backwards when images and boxouts are inserted so don't worry too much about stray lines of text till the publication is close to completion.
