In 1812, the Russians raised in excess of 300,000 provincial militia (Opolchenie) and volunteers in addition to the Cossacks and Irregular Cavalry (see Cossack Hurrah!!). These acted as a reserve, replacements, and forming flying columns in the pursuit of the Grande Armee.
