On 1 August 1808 the British fleet carrying Sir Arthur Wellesley, soon to become Viscount and subsequently the Duke of Wellington, and a British expeditionary army anchored at the estuary of the Mondego River ready to support Portugal in its struggle against the Emperor Napoleon.
