The expedition to Egypt, with so many aspects that are truly unique to this very specific part of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, has been a serious distraction to me for many years. The dress of the French Army was subject to the necessities of change brought about by adapting to the climate and to the economics of an isolated army dependent on local material. The clash of cultures was reflected in the differences in an almost medieval army on the one hand and an industrial age army on the other. The influence of the British both on sea and land produced its own consequences.

What follows is the product of a long and personal excursion into this period. It is not a political history and while some political background is included it concentrates on the military aspects of the campaign. This volume concentrates on the campaign up to the departure of Bonaparte and the uniforms of the French Army, from embarkation through to its final departure.
